Government, Local Councils, local organisations, service providers and individuals offer financial support for people who are impacted by Covid-19. Check what supports are available to you, both Australia Wide and State Based.

Australia Wide Support

Covid-19 is challenging for all Australians. Many have lost jobs or been put under financial "hardship" due to circumstances outside their control. There is financial support available. The following gives an overview of the current support options.

Make sure you have a MYGOV account 

If you have not already set up your MyGov account, make sure you have this before you go ahead and apply for any Government support. For details on how to set this up click the link.

Intention to Claim a Centrelink Payment

If you have not been on Centrelink before, register your intent to claim a Centrelink Payment through your MyGOV Account. Once completed Centrelink will be in contact with you and guide you through the steps. Click the link to find out more.

Claim a Centrelink Payment 
(If you’re a current or past customer)

If you are not able to work or don’t have work (including Sole traders/Self Employed) are in isolation or hospitalised or a carer of someone who is infected or isolated or caring for children. You may get one of the following payments: Youth Allowance, JobSeeker Payment, Parenting Payment. Click the link for more details or submit your claim using your Centrelink online account

Crisis Payment 

A one off payment if you’re in severe financial hardship because of extreme circumstances. This payment is still subject to eligibility. Contact Centrelink to check if you are eligible. This may apply if you are a Humanitarian Entrant into Australia for the first time

 Job Keeper Payment

The JobKeeper payment of $1500 a fortnight helps businesses (including self employed) significantly impacted by the Coronavirus cover the costs of their employees’ wages, so more Australians can retain their jobs and continue to earn an income. Access your Superannuation

The Government is allowing individuals affected by the Coronavirus to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation in 2019-20 and a further $10,000 in 2020-21.

Moneysmart have a detailed map of where to find free support from Financial Counsellors when impacted by Covid-19. Financial Counsellors will support you and advocate to organisations for you. Find contact details in the link. 

 National Debt Helpline

A not-for-profit service that helps people in Australia tackle their debt problems. They offer access to helpful supports and free financial counsellors. Learn how they can help by clicking the link. 

Talk to your Bank

Banks are offering support to people who have loans and are impacted by Covid-19 and dealing with "hardship". Australian banks have hardship teams ready to help. The type of assistance will depend on individual circumstances.

No Interest Loans (NILS) provide individuals and families on low incomes with access to safe, fair and affordable credit. Loans are available for essential goods and services. Learn more by clicking the link

 Treasury Summary of Supports

 AFCA - Financial Complaints Authority

AFCA is the overseeing body for financial complaints. AFCA may be able to offer support and information to individuals financially impacted by the ongoing coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). Victorian Gov't Financial Supports

The Victorian State Government have put in place a range of financial supports for Businesses and Individuals dealing with Covid-19. For more detailed information click the link.

Working for Victoria

$500 million to assist people who have lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19. Under the Working for Victoria Fund, displaced workers will be eligible to apply for different types of work. For more click the link.
